1991 Vernaccia di Oristano DOC Riserva 375ml

Description

The production of Vernaccia in the lower Valley of the Tirso in Sardinia, has its roots in very ancient times. It is obtained exclusively from grapes of the vine of the same name; and the Riserva is left to mature for 20 years in chestnut barrels, in the dusky half-light of the Contini cellars.

The barrels are oxygenated, and the wine develops a flor, a natural, native yeast growth which acts as a protective layer, while also imparting certain flavours and aromas to the wine. Sherry is also made with a similar production method, and the resulting wine is not unlike a full-bodied fino Sherry.

Bright pale amber-gold. Lovely lift to the aromas of orange peel, ginger, brown sugar, and grilled hazelnut. Super concentrated and glyceral but with terrific penetration and verve to its flavors of orange oil, honey and hazelnut spread. Not at all heavy or over the top, this extremely long, savory wine will easily last decades. Not especially sweet, this rich wine will work best with aged cheeses, including blues or rich, hearty long cooked white meat stews. -- Ian D'Agata, August 2016
