Although the Eucalyptus is indigenous to Australia, they have been planted in many countries around the world for their capacity to stabilize landscapes and soak up water from swamp lands.

In the 1930s, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini planted thousands of eucalyptus trees in the marshes around Rome as part of an attempt to drain them and create new agricultural land and destroy the habitat of the anopheles mosquito which transmits malaria. Large areas of Eucalypt forests were also planted in Calabria for a similar reason.

In Italy, the eucalyptus tree blooms in the months of June to August and the unique fragrance attracts numerous honey bees.

Honey from these flowers has a light amber color with a taste of caramel.
