Giovanni Dri Schioppettino 'Monte dei Carpini'

2011 Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 750ml

Description

Schioppettino (also known as Ribolla Nera) is one of Friuli's great native red grapes (including Pignolo, Refosco del Peduncolo Rosso and Terrano) which thankfully made a comeback in the late 1970s.

Without the persistence of some producers like Giovanni Dri to preserve their local varieties, ones such as Schioppettino could have been supplanted by other international grapes. It produces wines that are highly perfumed with black pepper spice, forest fruit characters and blackberry flavours.

Fermentation for 20 days in contact with the skins. After racking and two transfers to eliminate the lees of fermentation, the wine is placed in old barrels for 12 months. The barrels used for the red wines are never new but they are used for Ramandolo for 2 to 3 years and then move on to maturing the red wines.
